I sat in a branch on a Saturday because a friend needed 2,00,000 for a medical bill and a leftover wedding cost. The officer said three years, no problem, EMI will be comfortable. Comfortable is a sales word. I wanted the rupee.

Personal loan rates sit higher than home loans. That is the first thing I tell people. Dont take a 9 percent home loan screenshot and paste it on a personal loan talk. The product is unsecured. Bank prices that.

Same EMI Calculator as the home loan page. Three boxes. Different numbers inside them.

Open this calculator, fill it like a personal loan

Loan amount is 200000.

Interest rate (yearly) is where I stop guessing 9. I start around 12 to 16 for a salaried guy with a okay score. A clean file can see 11. A messy bureau or a small NBFC app can show 18. I run a ladder so nobody gets a shock later.

Tenure is months. Three years is 36. Not 3. If you put 3, EMI looks like 70,000 and you will think I am joking.

Hit Calculate. Monthly EMI is the line I care about first. Then Total interest. Then Total payout. That last one is what you actually send the bank over 36 months.

This is an estimate, not an official figure. Their day-count and a processing fee can nudge it.

If the three boxes still feel new, first time using the EMI calculator is the slower version. Same page. I am just faster here because the question is already 2 lakh and 36 months.

worked example

2 lakh at rates personal loans actually sit

I locked Loan amount at 2,00,000 and Tenure at 36. Only Interest rate (yearly) moved.

At 11 percent, EMI is about ₹6,548. Total interest about ₹35,719. Total payout about ₹2,35,719.

At 12 percent, EMI about ₹6,643. Interest about ₹39,143. Payout about ₹2,39,143.

At 13 percent, EMI about ₹6,739. Interest about ₹42,596. Payout about ₹2,42,596.

At 14 percent, EMI about ₹6,836. Interest about ₹46,079. Payout about ₹2,46,079.

At 15 percent, EMI about ₹6,933. Interest about ₹49,590. Payout about ₹2,49,590.

At 16 percent, EMI about ₹7,031. Interest about ₹53,131. Payout about ₹2,53,131.

At 18 percent, EMI about ₹7,230. Interest about ₹60,297. Payout about ₹2,60,297.

See the EMI column. From 12 to 16 the monthly number only moves about ₹388. People say see, rate doesnt matter. Then look at interest. 12 percent costs about ₹39,000. 16 percent costs about ₹53,000. That ₹14,000 is real money you could have used on the medical bill itself.

My friend heard 6,500 and nodded. His take-home is 42,000. After rent and a small card bill, 6,500 is a tight month, not a comfortable one. The officer was talking about the bank's comfort. Not his.

I told him to run 14 and 16 even if they quoted 12. Quote can change after they pull the bureau. Better to know both EMIs before you sign.

What 36 months does to the total

Three years feels short next to a home loan. Interest still adds up because the rate is fat.

On 2,00,000 at 14 percent, you put back about ₹2,46,079. You borrowed 2 lakh. You paid about 46,000 extra for the privilege of getting money this month.

If he had taken 24 months instead, EMI jumps. I ran 14 percent for 24 months in my head the same way. Higher monthly, less total interest. He said he cannot do 9,000 a month. So 36 it is. That is a honest trade. I dont shame the 36 month choice. I just want him to see the 46,000.

If he stretches to 48 months to drop EMI, interest climbs again. Personal loans sometimes cap around 5 years anyway. And a 4 year personal loan has a way of still being there when the wedding photos are already old.

The schedule on this tool is not a full amortisation table. You see totals. If you open a bank schedule and the interest line still looks weird, I opened the EMI schedule and still dont get total interest is the cousin explanation. Early months are mostly interest. That is reducing balance, not a scam.

Bank EMI can still differ a bit. Daily reducing, a different start date, they have reasons. I dont promise their SMS will print ₹6,836. I promise this box is close enough to decide yes or no. More on the gap in why bank EMI and this calculator dont match.

Processing fee, foreclosure, the stuff I forget in the branch

Processing fee is often 1 to 3 percent plus GST on personal loans. On 2,00,000 that can be 2,000 to 7,000 gone at the start. Sometimes they deduct it and you get 1,94,000 in the account. You still pay EMI on 2,00,000.

This calculator has no fee box. I subtract the fee in a notebook. If you need a full 2 lakh in hand, you may have to apply for a bit more. Then put that higher principal in Loan amount and run EMI again.

Foreclosure charges exist on some personal loans, especially in the first year. I dont put a fake rule number here. Read your agreement. If you plan to close in month 8 with a bonus, ask that question before you sign, not after.

Insurance again. Some apps tick a box by default. EMI goes up. You think the rate changed. It did not. A add-on sat on top.

Prepayment. This page cannot model a extra 20,000 in month 10. If you already prepaid a chunk, reduce Loan amount and reduce remaining months, then Calculate. Rough, but better than ignoring it.

I also tell people, dont take 2 lakh if 1,20,000 solves the bill. Interest is percent of what you borrow. Smaller principal, smaller everything.

If you already have a card EMI, think twice

Personal loan EMI plus a card EMI plus rent is how months break. The eligibility question is a different tool. Salary is 40,000, how much loan can I get and I already have an EMI, how much extra loan is safe use the Loan Eligibility Calculator. FOIR pie. Existing EMIs box.

On this post I am only answering what you pay if you already decided 2 lakh for 36 months.

A 40,000 take-home with a 6,800 personal loan EMI is 17 percent of in-hand on this one loan. Add a 4,000 card EMI and you are in the zone banks start frowning, and you start skipping SIPs. That is how a 2 lakh loan becomes a 3 year lifestyle cut.

I still think the EMI Calculator is the right first click. Loan amount 200000. Interest rate (yearly) the number on the offer SMS, plus one higher rate for safety. Tenure 36.

Write the Monthly EMI on paper. Write Total interest next to it. If both numbers sit okay with your month, proceed. If only EMI looks okay and interest looks ugly, that is still information. You are paying that ugly number for speed. Sometimes speed is worth it. Medical bill was worth it for my friend. A TV on a festive offer usually is not.

Dont use a home loan rate. Dont put 3 in Tenure. Dont compare with a flat-rate flyer from a shop. Reducing balance is what this box does, and what most bank personal loans do.

Run it, screenshot the result, take that to the branch. When they say comfortable, you have a number to put next to that word.
