My cousin called at 6.40, I was still in the cab.
He said 8 lakh, new regime, is tax zero or not.
I told him stop forwarding slab charts from office groups.
Those charts dont say if they mean CTC, taxable, or some uncle's last year number.
Open the income tax calculator on this site first.
This is an estimate, not an official figure.
He asked me like I sit in the tax office
I dont.
I type numbers in a box, same as him.
The tax tool here is a FY 2026-27 new regime estimate only.
Slabs can change when the budget wants.
I am not copying the government utility.
Dont treat this page as ITR.
He said, but WhatsApp says rebate till 12 lakh.
I said, rebate talk is why 8 lakh looks jumpy.
One chart shows tax.
Next chart shows nil.
Both can be talking about different income boxes.
Some people type 8,00,000 as CTC.
Some type 8,00,000 as taxable after everything.
Those is not the same thing.
Sorry, those are not the same thing.
I keep mixing is and are when I talk fast.
Anyway.
What I type in the tax tool
On this site you get two things to fill.
First box is Yearly income.
I put 8,00,000 there.
Indian commas, eight lakh, not 800000 if you want to read it without squinting, the box still takes the number.
Second control is Apply standard deduction ₹75,000.
It is a Yes / No switch.
Yes, estimate with 75,000.
No, I already reduced it.
That 75,000 is an estimate switch on this page.
It is not a stamp from a gazette.
If your salary slip already knocked something off, pick No, so you dont cut twice.
If you have a raw yearly figure and you want the usual salary-style cut, pick Yes.
I pick Yes for him, because he sent a CTC style number.
Hit Calculate.
Look at Estimated tax + cess first.
Then look at Income after std. deduction.
Then look at Standard deduction used.
There is a Note row also.
It says FY 2026-27 new regime estimate only.
Read that row.
Dont skip it.
Rebate is why 8 lakh looks jumpy
On this tool, if income after the standard deduction switch still sits at or under 12,00,000, the tax before cess can come out as zero.
That is the rebate style cut this estimate uses.
So 8,00,000 with the 75,000 switch on becomes 7,25,000 after that cut.
7,25,000 is under 12,00,000.
Result often shows nil tax + cess.
If I flip the switch to No, income stays 8,00,000.
Still under 12,00,000.
Still can show nil.
Then he said, so why did my friend pay something.
I said, because his 8 lakh was not the same 8 lakh.
Maybe FD interest sat on top.
Maybe two jobs.
Maybe the friend used an old slab chart in his head.
Maybe the friend was on old regime last year and is mixing years.
Maybe payroll already deducted something and he is calling that "tax on 8 lakh" when part of it is something else.
Rebate talk makes people fight.
One guy calculates slab tax first, 5 percent on the chunk above 4,00,000, and he gets a few tens of thousands in his notebook.
Then someone else says rebate wipes it.
Then the first guy feels cheated by a blog.
On this site I dont print a fake circular number to settle that fight.
I show the estimate the box is built for.
If you want the slab story without rebate, do that on paper if you like.
Just dont file from the paper.
Official portal still wins.
Standard deduction is a switch, not a law printout
He asked, is 75,000 fixed forever.
I said I dont know forever.
This page uses 75,000 as the estimate.
Budget years move that kind of number.
If you already reduced income in your own sheet, pick No.
If you put 8,00,000 and also pick Yes, the tool cuts 75,000 again.
That is how this box is written.
I tried both ways for him on the call.
Yes: income after std. deduction 7,25,000, deduction used 75,000.
No: income after std. deduction 8,00,000, deduction used 0.
Tax + cess still came nil both times, under this estimate, because both taxable figures sat under that 12 lakh rebate line the tool uses.
That is the jumpy part.
People expect a big swing when they toggle the switch.
At 8 lakh, the swing may show in the middle rows, not in the tax row.
At a higher salary the same toggle can move tax.
Dont assume 8 lakh behaviour for 18 lakh.
If you want to see a case where the calculator and a government page disagree by a couple of thousand, I wrote why the tax calculator is 2,000 less than official.
That post is for the gap, not for a promise that we match.
We dont promise a 100 percent match with any bank or any portal.
What the result rows actually say
Estimated tax + cess is the headline.
Tax before cess is the raw tax this estimate computed.
Cess 4% is four percent on that tax.
If tax is zero, cess is zero.
Income after std. deduction is the figure that went into the slab-and-rebate logic.
Standard deduction used is either 75,000 or 0, depending on the switch.
Note is the year label.
I make him screenshot those rows.
Not only the green-ish headline.
Because later he will say "you told me zero" and forget he had typed 8,00,000 with Yes.
If next month he adds 40,000 of interest in his head but not in the box, that is his mess.
The box only knows what you typed.
I also told him, 8 lakh on an offer letter is not always 8 lakh in this box.
CTC can hold employer PF, gratuity, insurance.
Taxable salary after exemptions is a different animal.
This tool is not a take-home tool.
If he wants a monthly in-hand picture, that is another page.
For a 12 lakh fight at Sunday lunch, see 12 lakh salary, old vs new regime rough gap.
That one stays rough too.
Old regime is not even a mode on this tax page.
This version is new regime estimate only.
What I dont put in that box
I dont put HRA bills.
I dont put 80C lists.
I dont put home loan interest.
New regime talk is already a thinner deduction world, and this box is thinner still.
It is income in, optional standard deduction switch, then an estimate.
Other income, I add it in my head to the yearly income box if I want a scarier number.
FD interest, savings interest above the usual small stuff, a freelance credit.
If I hide those, the nil result is a feel-good lie.
I dont put monthly salary in the yearly box.
That is a classic.
Someone types 66,000 because that is the credit they remember, and then they stare at a tiny tax and feel rich.
Yearly income means yearly.
8,00,000 yearly.
Not 8,00,000 monthly, nobody in our family makes that, but you get the idea.
I dont use this as Form 16.
I dont use this as a notice reply.
If a number will go on a return, I open the official site.
I said that twice on the call.
He still asked for a circular number.
I dont invent those.
How I talk him off the WhatsApp chart
The chart he sent had five colours and no year.
No mention of cess.
No mention of rebate.
No mention of standard deduction.
Just 8 lakh and a rupee figure.
That is how office groups work.
I told him, if a chart cannot say which year and which regime, throw it.
Then I walked the same 8,00,000 on this site.
Two toggles.
Same nil under this estimate.
Then I said, now type 13,00,000 with Yes, just to see the tool actually can show tax.
He did.
The middle rows moved.
He calmed down a bit, because he saw the box is not stuck on zero for every salary.
It is stuck on zero for his 8 lakh case under this rebate estimate.
That is different.
If slabs change next budget, 8 lakh can look different.
I will not pretend I know next February.
Small mistakes I still make, so he dont copy them
I once left last week's 18 lakh in the box and talked about 8 lakh.
The result was not nil.
I looked stupid for ten seconds.
Always check the Yearly income box before you talk.
I once picked No thinking I was being careful, then also subtracted 75,000 on paper, and compared that paper to the tool.
Of course they fought.
Pick one method.
I once added monthly professional tax into this yearly income box.
That is the wrong tool for that.
Professional tax sits on the take-home page if you want it.
This tax page does not have a professional tax field.
Dont force it.
Extra comma habit, I write 8,00,000, in chats, and people think I typed two numbers.
It is one number.
Eight lakh.
If your cousin is in a rush, send him the tool link and say fill Yearly income 800000, keep the standard deduction on Yes, read the Note row.
Then tell him official site still wins.
I hang up after that.
I am not his CA.
I am the guy who knows which box on this site.
When 8 lakh is not really 8 lakh
Joining bonus in year one.
Notice buyout.
Leave encashment.
Two Form 16 in the same year.
Parent's FD he forgot is in his PAN.
Any of that can push the real taxable figure.
This calculator will not find it for you.
You have to type a bigger yearly income if you know it.
If you dont know it, stop quoting nil tax at dinner.
Say, on a simple 8,00,000 with this estimate, it came nil.
That sentence is honest.
The loud sentence "I pay zero forever" is not.
Rebate rules can move.
Standard deduction can move.
The year label on this tool can get stale if we dont update the estimate.
I put updated on the article so you see I revisited it.
Still, official portal on the day you file is the one that matters.
If payroll already cut TDS every month, your March refund or payable is a separate story.
A nil estimate here does not mean your slip showed nil TDS.
Those two conversations is different.
They are different.
I said is again.
You heard me.
Use the box, take the screenshot, then go confirm.
