Sunday lunch, uncle started the old versus new fight again.

My cousin looked at me like I am supposed to end it with one number.

I said I dont have one number.

Twelve lakh is where people argue, because both sides can sound right.

I keep it rough.

No fake circular numbers.

I refused to play CA at the table

Uncle had a page from last year printed.

Cousin had a reel.

Neither of them said which deductions sit in the 12,00,000.

HRA or no HRA.

80C or no 80C.

Home loan or a rented room.

That gap is the whole fight.

On this site the tax page is new regime estimate only.

There is no old regime toggle.

I said that out loud so uncle dont think I hid a button.

Open income tax calculator.

Fill Yearly income with 12,00,000.

Then use Apply standard deduction ₹75,000.

I tried Yes first.

This is an estimate, not an official figure.

What the new-regime box does with 12 lakh

Yearly income 12,00,000.

Switch Yes, estimate with 75,000.

Income after std. deduction becomes 11,25,000.

That 75,000 is an estimate on this page.

Not a photocopy of a government utility.

The tool's rebate style cut, the way it is written now, treats taxable at or under 12,00,000 as nil tax before cess.

So 11,25,000 can show Estimated tax + cess as zero.

Tax before cess zero.

Cess 4% zero.

Note still says FY 2026-27 new regime estimate only.

Slabs can change.

I flipped the switch to No.

Income after std. deduction stays 12,00,000.

Deduction used 0.

Under this same rebate line, 12,00,000 can still come nil.

Cousin said, then why is uncle shouting.

I said, because uncle is talking old regime with a pile of proofs.

Or he is talking a year when rebate sat somewhere else.

Or he added rent income in his head.

The box only knows 12,00,000.

worked example

Old regime I only talk in words

I will not run old regime math on this tool.

The page does not do it.

I also will not invent a notification number to sound official.

Qualitative only.

Old regime, people still talk about a lower basic exemption than the new-regime stories you hear now.

They talk 80C, insurance, tuition, ELSS, PPF.

They talk HRA if they pay rent and the salary structure has HRA.

They talk home loan interest if they have that certificate.

If a person at 12 lakh has almost no deductions, old regime often looks heavier.

If a person at 12 lakh has a fat 80C, rent receipts, and a home loan, old can still win.

That is why the argument never dies at lunch.

Two cousins, same 12 lakh CTC, different rent and different LIC, different answer.

I dont settle that with this website's tax box.

I tell them, new regime estimate is what this page can show.

For old, sit with a CA or the official utility.

Official portal wins.

Dont ask me to stamp uncle's printout.

Where the rough gap actually lives

The gap is not "12 lakh always zero" versus "12 lakh always sixty thousand".

The gap is, what did you subtract before you said 12 lakh.

If 12 lakh is CTC, employer PF is inside that CTC.

Insurance the company pays can be inside.

Gratuity provision can be inside.

Taxable salary can be lower.

If 12 lakh is already taxable after everything, that is a harder number.

This tool does not split CTC.

It is not the take-home page.

If I want a scarier new-regime estimate, I type a bigger yearly income.

13,00,000 with Yes.

Then income after std. deduction crosses that 12 lakh line the rebate uses here.

Then tax rows can wake up.

That is useful, because people think 12 lakh is a magic cliff.

On this estimate, the cliff is more about taxable after the switch, not the offer-letter headline.

I said that twice.

Uncle still pointed at his paper.

I let him.

I am not winning Sunday.

Boxes again, slower, because he typed monthly

He put 1,00,000 in Yearly income.

Because he takes home something near that some months.

I deleted it.

Yearly income.

12,00,000.

Or 1200000 if you hate commas.

The label is Yearly income.

Not monthly.

Standard deduction switch, Yes if the 12 lakh is a gross-ish salary figure and you want this site's 75,000 estimate.

No if you already reduced it on a spreadsheet.

Hit Calculate.

Read Estimated tax + cess.

Read Income after std. deduction.

Read the Note.

If you came here from the 8 lakh panic, that write-up is income tax on 8 lakh in the new regime.

Eight lakh is a calmer number under this rebate estimate.

Twelve lakh is where the family starts using words like "but my friend".

If the official page and this box differ by a couple of thousand later, I already grumbled about that in why the tax calculator is 2,000 less than official.

We dont promise a bank-style match.

We dont promise a portal match.

Surcharge, exemptions, a slab update, a different year, any of that can open a gap.

What I tell him to carry back to uncle

Say this sentence.

On CalcInHand I typed 12,00,000 in Yearly income, kept standard deduction on Yes, and the FY 2026-27 new regime estimate showed nil under their rebate style cut.

Then say, old regime I did not calculate on that page.

Then say, if I have rent and 80C, I will check official portal, not a reel.

If uncle wants a circular, I dont have one.

I will not mint a fake number.

Rebate and standard deduction on this site are estimates.

They can be wrong next year.

They can be wrong this year if your facts are different.

That is the honest bag I send him home with.

Mistakes that make the gap look fake

Typing 12 instead of 1200000.

The box will treat 12 as twelve rupees.

Tax will look like a joke.

Typing 12,000,000 because someone used Western commas and meant 1.2 crore.

Then the result looks scary and Sunday gets worse.

Mixing two years in one sentence.

Last year's old regime payable versus this estimate.

Of course they dont match.

Counting employer PF as tax.

It is not tax.

Using this result as ITR.

It is not ITR.

Forgetting other income.

A small FD can be enough to change a dinner argument even if it does not change this particular 12 lakh screenshot.

I also told him, cess is 4 percent on tax in this tool.

If tax is zero, cess is zero.

If someday tax is not zero, dont forget cess when you compare uncle's paper.

Uncle's paper sometimes forgets cess.

Then he says we are higher.

Or we are lower.

Depends who forgot.

Why I still open the box anyway

Because cousin will type something.

Better he types it here with a Note row than he types it in a random APK.

I want him to see the two controls.

Yearly income.

Standard deduction switch.

That is the whole UI.

No old regime.

No 80C list.

No HRA calculator hiding under a tab.

If he needs those, he leaves this page.

I am fine with that.

This site is a helper.

Footer on the site already says we are not Income Tax.

I repeat it because people skip footers.

The numbers on the result card is a working copy.

The numbers are a working copy.

I do that is/are thing when I am tired.

You still got the point.

If 12 lakh is your offer and you also care what hits the bank, that is take-home, different tool.

If 12 lakh is your taxable and you just want a new-regime feel, this is the tool.

Fill the boxes I named.

Dont invent a third box.

There isn't one.

And dont tell uncle I certified his printout.

I certified nothing.

I sat on a plastic chair, ate rice, and opened a calculator.
